Dublin, Ireland - July 4, 2023

In a landmark celebration at Iveagh House (Dublin), the European Union, Canada, and the United States celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Galway Statement, a crucial agreement that aims to progress research in the Atlantic Ocean and promote sustainable management of marine resources.

The Galway Statement has not just transformed worldwide ocean science but has also encouraged efforts to tackle important challenges in the field. Key achievements include the restoration of marine ecosystems, protection of vulnerable coastal communities from rising sea levels, and the advancement of ocean science, research, and observation systems to aid vulnerable species and habitats. This collaboration has birthed additional agreements such as the Belem Statement on Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Cooperation and the All-Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Alliance (AAORIA). These agreements have propelled a new scale of ocean science cooperation, culminating in the Ministerial Declaration of the AAOIA in Washington D.C. in 2022.

From an EU perspective, this collaborative effort represents a shining example of the EU Global Approach to Research and Innovation and is integral to the EU Atlantic Strategy. Over the last decade, in fact, the EU has invested over €300 million in projects fostering cooperation between European and international scientists across the Atlantic.

The celebratory event in Dublin gathered high-level representatives, including Tánaiste Micheál Martin TD, European Commissioner Mairead McGuinness, and other European and international Atlantic partners. The event showcased the establishment of a new Atlantic Ocean research and innovation community, highlighting the profound impact of diverse initiatives and collective efforts on shaping joint research roadmaps, instigating innovative discoveries, and delivering discernible advantages to coastal communities, citizens, and the youth.

As the Galway Statement marks a decade of success, it underscores the importance of global collaboration in tackling marine challenges, supporting the UN Decade of Ocean Science, and advancing the UN Sustainable Development Agenda 2030.
