Role in Project

Mainly involved in WP3 of the project. UNEXE's main aim within Mission Atlantic is to determine if/how the size structure of mesozooplankton throughout the Atlantic has changed in recent decades as the ocean has warmed. We are addressing this by analysing archived mesozooplankton samples that have been routinely collected throughout the Atlantic as part of the ‘Atlantic Meridional Transect’ (AMT) project since 1995. In early 2023 we sailed from the Falklands to the UK, collecting the latest suite of samples for AMT/Mission Atlantic (see https://www.instagram.com/oceanplankton/ for images of the types of animals we encountered). All of the preserved samples are being processed via FlowCam Macro technology, which automatically generates standardised data on the size structure of the sampled animals.
